In the 1980’s, a need to treat a patient with an extreme hydrophobia challenged Dr. Roger Callahan, a California psychologist. After months of treatment, he managed to persuade his patient “Mary” to sit by the pool. When he asked her what she thought and feels about water, and where her fear came from, Mary told him that she felt a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. Knowing that the stomach meridian connects to points located under the eye, he asked her to try tapping under her eye. After a couple of minutes of tapping, the feeling in the pit of her stomach disappeared and so she just ran to the edge of the pool. Mary’s experience under the therapy he became a turning point for the new era of psychology. Callahan pursued his new approach devotedly.
In mid-1990, a Certified Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), a Stanford engineering graduate, and an ordained minister named Gary Craig developed an effective psychotherapeutic method. Intensely interested in personal improvement, he trained with Dr. Callahan. He used the skills he acquired to simplify and improve on Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and named his new idea Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT.
According to Craig, imbalances in the body’s energy system have enormous effects on the personal psychology and subsequently on the physical health. He further theorized that tackling the negative experience as well as curing the negative emotions is going to correct the energy imbalance. EFT gets rid of the negative emotions that disrupt the human system’s flow of energy.
It combines Meridian-based therapies such as acupuncture and acupressure and Mind-Body therapies for an increased effectiveness in dealing with various psychological conditions like depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, addictions, phobias; and physical conditions including multiple sclerosis, and cancer among a myriad of disorders and sicknesses. Nevertheless, it is a non-surgical, painless, and drug-free procedure. No equipment is required and it works well for all ages including the hardest skeptics.
Generally, EFT is easy to self-administer and is possible to execute over the telephone or the Internet. The therapist assists the patient in holding a distressing memory or emotion in mind by formulating the correct repetitive phrases required as the patient simultaneously taps on a series of 12 specific meridian or acupuncture points on his own body. Within a short time, it helps in developing attitude and behavior, resolving problems, lessening stress, and returning the equilibrium in one’s life.
In 2000, Patricia Carrington, a clinical psychologist and EFT Master, discovered that allowing the patients to choose their own positive affirmation into the default EFT statement addresses the real problem. Craig recommends what is now known as Carrington’s EFT Choice Methods.
The widespread of EFT has lead to many frequently asked questions on the internet about its origin and essence. The answer is that although it is not a replacement or substitute for traditional medical treatment it is now the leading Energy Psychology technique globally, which uses the combined principles of acupuncture and psychotherapy, and it evolved from the works of brilliant people who aims to eradicate long and half-effective rehabilitation methods for deep-rooted traumas and multi-layered emotional problems.
