Depending on the locality, or localities, you can choose as the most appropriate solution a hotel in Sicily, for instance, to spend a period of relaxation by the sea, or a bed and breakfast if you choose to visit the less tourist inside areas. An ideal place is surely the south eastern Sicily. Here is the part of Sicily called Greek Sicily which has its hub in the beautiful city of Siracusa, declared world heritage together with the nearby necropolis of Pantalica. These places represent a unique example in the history of the Mediterranean human, cultural, architectural and artistic layers. "The city is a significant example of an outstanding universal value" are the words used during its proclamation.
The city of Syracuse in addition to Neapolis, the greek archaeological park, shines thanks to Ortigia, the old town center, which holds its history and soul. This is probably the Sicilian center that more than any other has maintained the stratifying urban fabric of civilizations by blending among them the Greek, Byzantine, Norman and baroque civilizations in a single tangle of streets and architecture.
It is impossible not to get lost among the small alleys or to admire a balcony, a shop, a detail of a building. It is worth devoting time to visit the outskirts of the city to discover the flavors, traditions and other major centers. If you go to the Hyblean plateau, in the hinterland, you will find very interesting locations such as Ferla, Buscemi, Palazzolo Acreide and the nearby becropoli of Pantalica, an incredible series of tunnels dug into the rock. Then you can decide to move to the coast to enjoy the beaches and the sea. Going North in direction to Priolo Gargallo is the Thapsos peninsula, a place of extreme beauty. Even more to the north, towards Augusta, there are the archaeological area of Megara Hyblaea and Brucoli, a small fishing village in a bay of white limestone rock. Towards the south you meet the natural reserve of Ciane River, an area of great natural interest, including the mouth of the river and salinas. The south coast of the city is filled with beaches. There are comfortable, worldly and unspoiled beaches depending on your needs. Among the many beaches the best known are the Fontane bianche and the beach della Marchesa. You should not miss Avola and its numerous variety of almonds.
